Wolverine is currently conducting cleanup work at the site of its former tannery in Rockford. First, we cleared vegetation, constructed temporary access roads, detoured the White Pine Trail, and staged equipment and supplies. Then, we began installing silt curtains and cofferdams in the Rogue River, before starting to excavate. This work is described in more detail in posts here and here.
Included at the end of this post and at this link are updated maps showing the excavation areas in orange and turquoise. The areas located south of Rum Creek are labeled S1 through S7, and those located north of Rum Creek are labeled N1 and N2.
To help track the work, here is a chart showing the material we anticipate excavating from each area, and the current status of our activities:
Area | Material | Status |
S1 | Soil | Excavation in progress |
S2 | Soil | Excavation in progress |
S3 | Soil | Excavation in progress |
S4 | Soil | Excavation in progress |
S5 | Sediment | Cofferdam installed; excavation in progress |
S6 | Sediment | Excavation complete and backfilled; cofferdam removed |
S7 | Soil | Cofferdam installed; excavation in progress |
N1 | Soil, Leather Scraps, Hides | Cofferdam installation in progress; excavation anticipated to start next week |
N2 | Soil, Leather Scraps, Hides | Cofferdam being installed this week; excavation anticipated to start in mid-November |
Removed material is being taken to licensed landfills in Ohio and Canada as described here, and truck traffic is using this designated route. Some photos of the work performed this week are included at the end of this post.
