Update on Cleanup Work – Excavation Continues at Former Tannery

Wolverine is currently conducting cleanup work at the site of its former tannery in Rockford. Earlier this month we cleared vegetation, constructed temporary access roads, and staged equipment and supplies. We then installed silt curtains and cofferdams in the Rogue River, and began dewatering excavation areas. This work is described in more detail in blog posts here and here.

Last week, we began excavating, and this work is expected to include the removal of soil, sediment, leather scraps, and/or hides in the areas shown on this map and described below:

So far, we have completed excavating and backfilling one of the two areas of sediments south of Rum Creek. We have also completed excavating two of the four areas of soils south of Rum Creek, and started excavating a third area. Removed material is being taken to licensed landfills in Ohio and Canada as described here, and truck traffic is using this designated route.

Photos of the silt curtains, cofferdams, and excavation areas are included at the end of this post.

We will continue keeping the community informed through regular updates on this blog, www.WeAreWolverine.com, and through information posted at kiosks and in other locations accessible to the public.  As always, residents with questions are encouraged to contact Wolverine directly at HouseStreet@wwwinc.com or (616) 866-5627.
