Update on Cleanup Work at Former Tannery

As we discussed here and here, Wolverine is conducting cleanup work this fall at the site of its former tannery in Rockford. We selected a preeminent remediation contractor to lead the work, and last week workers began bringing trailers, equipment, and supplies to the site. Also, the White Pine Trail has been re-routed for the duration of the work.

This week, you can expect to see workers performing the following tasks:

  • Continue bringing trailers and construction equipment to the site;
  • Constructing an area near the trailers to stage equipment and supplies;
  • Adjusting and expanding fences to fully enclose the work areas;
  • Continue installing temporary access roads as shown on this map;
  • Installing erosion and sediment controls; and
  • Clearing vegetation along the Rogue River, north of Rum Creek

Once these tasks are complete, we expect to begin excavating soils, sediments, and other material as described here. Any hazardous waste will be sent to a landfill licensed to accept those wastes. All other material will also be transported offsite in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and we expect to finalize specific locations soon.

Wolverine and its contractors are committed to limiting the impact of this work on neighboring residents, surrounding businesses, and the broader community. Consistent with this commitment, we have established the designated route shown on this map for trucks traveling to and from the site, so that traffic through residential and commercial areas of Rockford is minimized.

We will continue keeping the community informed through regular updates on this blog, www.WeAreWolverine.com, and through information posted at kiosks and in other locations accessible to the public.  As always, residents with questions are encouraged to contact Wolverine directly at HouseStreet@wwwinc.com or (616) 866-5627.

Wolverine Selects Nationally-Known Contractor for Cleanup Work at Former Tannery

In connection with the cleanup work Wolverine is conducting this fall at its former tannery in Rockford, Wolverine is pleased to announce that it has selected Sevenson Environmental Services, Inc. as its lead contractor.

Sevenson’s roots go back to 1917, and today the firm is among the country’s most respected and accomplished environmental remediation contractors, having completed more than 1,475 projects with a total contract value exceeding $4.8 billion. Many of these projects were completed along rivers and other bodies of water, making Sevenson uniquely qualified to lead our efforts here in Rockford.

We described the work and provided detailed maps in a post last week. This week, Sevenson started to move trailers, construction equipment, and supplies onto the site, and the White Pine Trail is being re-routed for the duration of the work. Also, we will share a detailed schedule of all phases of the work once it has been finalized and approved.

Wolverine will be using this blog to keep the community informed as work progresses in the weeks and months ahead, and will also make information available at kiosks and other locations available to the public. In addition, residents with questions are encouraged to contact Wolverine directly at HouseStreet@wwwinc.com or (616) 866-5627.

White Pine Trail Detour to Begin Wednesday, October 2

As we discussed here and here, Wolverine will be conducting cleanup work this fall at the site of its former tannery in Rockford. As part of this work, the DNR has now issued a permit to close and re-route the White Pine Trail as shown in red on this map. The closure will commence tomorrow, October 2, and last for the duration of the work.

Wolverine and its contractors will strive to limit the impact of this work on neighboring residents, surrounding businesses, and the broader community. We will also continue keeping the community informed through regular updates on its blog, www.WeAreWolverine.com, and through information at kiosks and in other locations accessible to the public.

Cleanup Work to Begin This Week; White Pine Trail to be Temporarily Re-Routed

As we shared last week, Wolverine will be conducting cleanup work this fall at the site of its former tannery in Rockford. We also pledged to keep the community informed as the work progresses.  Consistent with this commitment, we want to let you know that workers will begin mobilizing over the next few days, bringing trailers, construction equipment, and supplies onto the site. Workers will also begin adjusting the fences to enclose the work areas, and will start to construct some of the temporary access roads shown on this map of the site.

As part of this work, it will be necessary to temporarily close the White Pine Trail along the length of the former tannery property.  We expect the closure to commence within the next week and last for the duration of the work.  During this time, trail traffic will be re-routed through Rockford as shown in red on the map below and here.  The timing and route are subject to change based on the final DNR permit that we expect to receive in the next few days.

Wolverine and its contractors will strive to limit the impact of this work on neighboring residents, surrounding businesses, and the broader community. We will also continue keeping the community informed through regular updates on its blog, www.WeAreWolverine.com, and through information at kiosks and in other locations accessible to the public.

As always, residents with questions are encouraged to contact Wolverine directly at HouseStreet@wwwinc.com or (616) 866-5627.
