Wolverine Working with EPA on Confirmation Sampling

Over the past year, Wolverine has been working closely with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and other state and local officials to address water quality issues in our community.  Some of the actions we’ve taken include sampling over 1,000 residential wells for PFOA and PFOS, offering bottled water to all homes being sampled, installing almost 400 whole house filters at a rate of 55 per week, sampling dozens of existing groundwater monitoring wells, drilling approximately 20 new groundwater monitoring wells, and setting up a call center that has handled over 2,000 inquiries from community members.  We’ve taken these voluntary actions because we are committed to this community and to doing what we believe is the right thing for our friends, family and neighbors.

As a further reflection of Wolverine’s ongoing commitment, we are now working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to facilitate sampling of several residential and groundwater monitoring wells, which will take place next week, to confirm the results of ongoing and prior sampling.  These confirmation samples are collected by EPA and sent to an independent laboratory to confirm that the results are the same as those received from laboratories used by Wolverine and the MDEQ.  The EPA expects to sample four or five existing monitoring wells at the House Street and Tannery locations, and approximately 15 residential wells.

Wolverine remains dedicated to working proactively with federal, state, and local officials to collect relevant, accurate data in pursuit of effective, long-term solutions, and we look forward to supporting the EPA’s work.

We are doing all of this because we have been here for nearly 140 years and we plan to be here for another 140 years.  We live here and work here – every employee at Wolverine cares deeply about this community, and we are committed to seeing this through to the end.

We Are Wolverine.

Wolverine to Sample Expanded Study Area

Wolverine Worldwide will soon begin sampling residential wells for PFOA and PFOS in an area newly-established by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and located approximately 1,500 feet on either side of the Rogue River, running from our former Tannery south to the Grand River.  Wolverine and its environmental engineers, Rose & Westra/GZA, began notifying homeowners on December 19, 2017, and sampling is expected to begin in early January.  Homeowners are being provided with bottled water while waiting for their results, which we expect to be available within four weeks after sampling.

We will continue to keep the community updated about this issue through our blog at WeAreWolverine.com, and will post a map of this study area on our Maps section when one becomes available.

Weekly Update – December 19

The goal of WeAreWolverine.com is to provide regular updates to the community on what’s happening and what we are doing to address the situation.

Below, you’ll find important updates for this week…

Well Testing Results
To date, we’ve sampled approximately 640 wells in the House Street Study Area, Buffer Zone, and Southeast Expansion Area, and have received results for 620 of them, or approximately 97%.  So far, 590 of these wells have tested below the very conservative EPA lifetime drinking water advisory level of 70 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA/PFOS – and 30 wells have tested above it.

To date, we’ve sampled approximately 390 wells in the Jewell Study Area and all Wolven Study Areas, and have received results for 170 of them, or approximately 44%.  So far, 140 of these wells have tested below 70 ppt, and 30 wells have tested above it.

The EPA lifetime drinking water advisory level of 70 ppt has a significant “safety buffer” built in, including assuming exposure for an entire lifetime, and that a pregnant or nursing woman could drink over 4 liters of water per day at 70 ppt PFOA/PFOS with no effect on developing babies and infants.  For more information, please see our blog post on this topic.

Whole House Filter Installation Update
To date, 335 whole house filters have been installed in homes in the House Street, Wolven, and Jewell Study Areas.  Installations are being prioritized based on the levels of PFOA/PFOS detected in wellsWe plan to install 55 filters each week until we’re done.

As we recently announced, we have expanded our whole-house filtration program to include all homes in the Jewell Study Area and all Wolven Study Areas that have confirmed test results with any detection of PFOA or PFOS.  In the interim, while results are being received, every home in these areas is being provided with bottled water through Culligan.  Eligible homeowners will be contacted by Culligan to arrange for whole house filter installation.

Field Work Update
The field work to remove non-hazardous waste from two parcels in the House Street area has been completed, and all waste has been disposed of by our contractor at a state-licensed facility.  We’ll be conducting additional removal work over the next few months, as access to individual parcels is allowed.  In addition, we have completed drilling 11 monitoring wells over the past two months, and will be drilling approximately 10-12 more over the next two months.  We appreciate the patience of the residents in these areas while this work is being completed.

We developed this blog as one way for you to hear directly from us and you’ll be hearing more from us in the coming days and weeks.  West Michigan is our home and we’ve always acted responsibly and taken our obligations as part of this community personally – for over a hundred years, Wolverine has been not only a leader and contributor to this community, but we’ve also been your neighbor – that’s why we’ve taken the proactive steps we have so far and why we’re committed to seeing this through to the end.  We hope you’ll follow this blog, learn about what we’re doing to make this right, and hear the other side of the story.

An Open Letter to Erin Brockovich from Wolverine Worldwide

Wolverine Worldwide would like to welcome Erin Brockovich to our hometown. We know how deeply you care about environmental issues, especially when it comes to water quality, and how they impact health and quality of life.

We know and respect your work in California as well as in many other places across the country and we agree with some statements you have made in the past about the pervasiveness of PFOA and PFOS, two of the family of compounds known as per- and polyflouroalkyl substances (PFAS), due to the vast array of products they have been used in for many decades.

While we are familiar with you, we also hope you take the time to learn about the work we’ve been doing for more than a year to restore the community’s faith in its water.  In case your national team of law firms – which includes Miller Law Firm, Robbins Geller Rudoman & Dowd LLP, and Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. – didn’t brief you, here are some of the facts:

We’ve been working closely with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) on this issue since last year, when we became aware of the possible presence of PFOA and PFOS in groundwater at our former Tannery location.

We also have been working collaboratively with the Kent County Health Department, Plainfield Township, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the state’s recently formed Michigan PFAS Action Response Team.

We have been working aggressively to respond to concerns about PFOA and PFOS even though human health effects from exposure to these chemicals are unknown, and there is no human study that has been conducted that proves exposure of an individual to any PFAS, including PFOA or PFOS, causes any illness. For more information, see: https://wearewolverine.com/2017/11/20/facts-about-pfas/

We, along with regulators and scientists, are still learning about these chemicals, which were used in a wide range of products and industries, including aerospace, automotive, construction, electronics, packaging and textiles.

We have hired a leading environmental consulting firm to conduct testing for PFOA and PFOS for more than 1,000 homes in our community and we have paid for every test.

We have supplied bottled water to residents in testing areas for free while they have waited for test results for their wells.

We have paid for the installation of more than 300 custom, whole house filters for individual residents.

We have made a commitment to install whole house filters and point-of-use filters for homes in study areas identified in consultation with MDEQ that test positive for any level of PFOA or PFOS.

We assembled a team within Wolverine to deal with this challenging and evolving situation on a daily basis. Executives from this team have attended two community town hall events and we answer every question from the community. We’ve answered over 2,000 calls and emails from our friends, families and neighbors.

In November, we set up this blog site – WeAreWolverine.com – to provide the community with updates and factual information on a regular basis.

Why did we take these actions?  Simply because these are our friends, family and neighbors.  We wanted to be sure you knew what we’re doing so that you understand that we haven’t just said that we are committed to doing the right thing, but we’re really striving to do the right thing.

We are doing all of this because we have been here for nearly 140 years and we plan to be here for another 140 years.  We live here and work here – every employee at Wolverine cares deeply about this community.

Thanks again for taking the time to come to West Michigan, we hope you’ll enjoy your day here.  We’d like to invite you back this summer (the weather is little nicer then, we promise) and host you at our offices.  We could update you on this situation and all the steps we’ve taken to help make this right for our community and to be a part of the solution for our hometown.
